Description |
Sewer's helper in the shape of a bird with spring clamp; spring clamp used for holding material; C clamp at bottom with design shaped handle for adjusting. Sewing birds were clamped to a table, helping individuals to keep fabric taut as they sewed. These birds helped individuals sew and hem by hand. Wealthy women often acquired highly detailed and ornamented bird clamps to showcase their social status. Sewing clamps lost their popularity as sewing machines became widespread. |
